Fibroids

Fibroids are benign growths of the muscle of the uterus (womb). Fibroids are very common and it is thought to affect 25 – 30% of all women, usually in their late thirties and early forties.

Symptoms can include heavy periods, lower abdomen pain, infertility, and miscarriage. However, many women may not be aware that they have fibroids.

The exact cause of fibroids is unknown, but excess oestrogen is a factor because it stimulates their growth. Therefore the natural treatment of fibroids is based on lowering oestrogen levels. This can be done by improving the body’s ability to detoxify and eliminate oestrogen, increasing our intake of phytoestrogen, and avoiding xenoestrogens.

Improving the body’s ability to detoxify and eliminate oestrogen:Dandelion root and milk thistle aid liver detoxification. Whilepsyllium huskslignan rich oils and probiotics improve bowel elimination.

Increasing Phytoestrogen intake: these are natural plant compounds that mimic oestrogen but are much weaker. Therefore a predominantly plant and vegetable based diet is beneficial. Good supplement sources of phytoestrogens include soya products, the herbs Agnus CastusBlack Cohosh and Don Quai.

Avoiding Xenoestrogens: these are artificial compounds that mimic oestrogen but are much stronger therefore encouraging fibroid growth. Sources include:

  • pesticides, fertilizers, and hormones fed to cattle and poultry, therefore organic produce and meat is best.
  • skincare (lotions, toothpastes, soaps, hair products) that contain parabens, phenoxyethanol, phthalates, and other compounds – therefore natural and organic skincare is best.
  • Plastics such as cling film, bottled water, plastic food containers, and styrafoam – chose glass where possible.
  • Mainstream chemical-ridden household cleaners
