Twelve million Brits claim to have a food allergy, yet less than a quarter have had it medically diagnosed*. 250,000 people in the UK have been diagnosed with celiac disease but there is another estimated 500,000 undiagnosed cases while it is estimated that 90,000 people have Crohn’s disease in the UK today. Food intolerances are different from allergies that can happen rapidly. Food intolerances occur when the body is unable to deal with a certain type of food; this is because the body does not produce enough enzymes needed to digest the food or the digestive tract has been put under stress because of illness or drugs and needs repairing.
Chronic tiredness, headaches, digestive problems, asthma, eczema or aching joints are all symptoms of food intolerances or allergies. It is important not to self diagnose and unfortunately tests are not available on the NHS, but tests can be done privately or by natural healthcare practitioners can help. Foods that may cause allergies or intolerances are gluten, wheat, eggs and dairy.
