Vitamins are necessary throughout all seasons, but some vitamins are particularly important according to the time of the year. During autumn and winter months, for example, it’s always recommended to get the most popular winter vitamin: Vitamin C! But another very important vitamin is necessary: Vitamin D, known as the “sunshine vitamin”.
WHY VITAMIN D?
Our bodies make vitamin D in response to the sun’s rays on our skin. That’s why during summer we generally see an increase in Vitamin D levels in our bodies. This important nutrient has a number of key benefits, including its role in supporting healthy bones and the immune system. Due to the line of latitude the UK is positioned on, from November to February it is very difficult to manufacture this vitamin from the sun. So, how can we get enough “sunshine vitamin”?
The scientific advisory committee on nutrition recommends that everyone living in the UK should consider taking a daily dose of vitamin D, in order to keep your bones, teeth and muscles healthy. You can either take a vitamin D supplement, or a multivitamin capsule, which will usually have a low level of vitamin D too. Eating certain foods can also provide with vitamin D – but, unfortunately, it’s not enough on its own! Visit our stores or online shop to find the best Vitamin D supplements.
Did you know that the skin of mushrooms can make vitamin D when sunlight hits it? Leaving mushrooms outside with direct exposure to sunlight (not inside because window glass will block UVB rays) means that become vitamin D-enriched! You can also buy vitamin D enriched mushrooms.
- Fatty Fish
Fatty fish such as salmon, herring or mackerel can be a good source of vitamin D. Salmon, for example, get vitamin D from the plankton they eat. But be careful: wild salmon will be rich in it, whereas farmed salmon may not have very much at all! If you are vegetarian or vegan, the only natural source of vitamin D is mushrooms.
- Cod Liver Oil
Cod liver oil is rich in Omega 3 fatty acids, but one tablespoon of it provides also far more than the government’s recommended daily intake of vitamin D! We recommend Lamberts Cod Liver Oil, manufactured in the UK with the highest pharmaceutical standards.
