Did you know that for the entire month of July, people all over the world take part in Plastic Free July, a global challenge to reduce and refuse single-use plastics?
In 2018 this movement, born in Australia in 2011 but active across the globe, was one of the world’s most popular environmental movements and has inspired over 120 million participants in 177 countries! The idea of not using any plastic for a month may sound impossible, but the challenge is not about perfection. Instead, it’s all about reducing plastic with small steps and in a way that works for you! That’s why on Plastic Free July’s website you can choose how to take the pledge: you can avoid single-use packaging, you can avoid the “big four”, or you can try to go completely plastic-free! All that just for one day, one week, the entire month or for July and beyond!
We love this challenge and we would like to get you involved by giving you our favourite 5 tips for reducing your plastic waste during this Plastic Free July:
- START WITH THE BIG FOUR
The so-called Big Four are plastic bags, water bottles, plastic straws and coffee cups. Avoid them is much easier than you think – you just need to replace your existing habits with new ones! Bring your own bag, use a reusable water bottle, choose reusable and plastic-free straws and reusable coffee cups.
- REFUSE PRE-PACKED FRUIT AND VEGETABLES
While grocery shopping, look for loose fruit and vegetables and bulk sections instead of buying plastic-wrapped products. It will reduce unnecessary plastic waste but also your food waste! Whether you need just a pinch or a few cups, buying in bulk helps you get exactly as little or as much as you need! In our stores around London you will find only organic and loose produce as well as bulk sections with your favourite foods!
- FOLLOW THE THREE R’S: REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE
Reduce what you buy, reuse plastic items as much as possible and buy recycled products to close the loop. How can you do that? Before you make a purchase, ask yourself these 3 simple questions:
- Do I actually need this?
- Is there an option with less plastic packaging?
- Is there an alternative made from recycled materials?
- LOOK FOR PLASTIC-FREE ALTERNATIVES
Not only fruit and vegetables! There are many items you regularly buy that typically come with a plastic packaging. Think about toothpaste, body wash, cleaning products and deodorants. But there’s a plastic-free alternative for everything! In our stores and online shop you can find many sustainable and plastic-free products such as plastic-free cling film, deodorants, toothpaste, soaps plus refill stations of body care and cleaning products!
- GO BEYOND YOURSELF
The plastic Free July challenge encourages people to reduce plastic also in their communities – whether they are their place of work, school or neighborhood. For example, you can broaden your impact by encouraging the people you work with to reduce single-use plastic with you! Food is a fantastic way to draw a community together, so why not start from the kitchen? You can invite your coworkers to drink their morning coffee from a reusable mug!
