Every day we have the choice to make our world a little less wasteful. So why not start with small changes that reduce waste in our day-to-day life? To make eco-conscious and sustainable choices is easier than you imagine! Let’s start with 10 easy zero waste tips to honour the Earth. It will be grateful for sure!
1. Bulk Purchase
You can avoid plastic and food waste by buying in bulk. This mean you can transfer your favourite products (i.e., fruit & veg, nuts, cereals, oats etc.) to your own reusable containers and buy exactly as little or as much as you need! Visit our stores for lots of loose organic foods!
2. Try to cut out on plastic
Single-use plastic is a huge problem for oceans, marine life and the health of our planet. Giving it up isn’t as difficult as you might think! Carry a reusable water bottle with you when going to work or travelling, bring a canvas bag with you when you go shopping, buy as much loose food as possible and carry a reusable cup with you for take-out beverages. 3. Buy organic and local
Organic food is not just better for your health but it’s also better for the planet. If you buy organic food, you make sure the land is used less intensively and you help curb global insect collapse. Furthermore, choosing local fruit and vegetables means less energy needed to transport and a smaller carbon footprint.
4. Use eco-friendly cleaning products
Many cleaning products contain harmful chemicals that aren’t environmentally friendly. Repeated exposure to these cleaning chemicals can affect the environment as well as your health. That’s why you should choose eco-friendly cleaning products, which are effective and safer, especially if you have little kids or pets in the house. An example? Freshen up the house with Sodasan’s eco-friendly products! They leave a pleasant scent and are made with natural ingredients! Find the range here.
To compost your expired food or compostable packaging not only will help create a natural fertilizer – it will also reduce the amount of waste going to landfill. So, next time you have let your food go that little bit too far past its ‘best by’ then compost it rather than putting it in the bin! Did you know that Rhythm 108 biscuits have a compostable packaging? Try them all in our shops!
6. Lights Off!
Whenever possible, keep lights off during the day and try to get in the habit of turning off lights when you leave a room! Try to use LED light bulbs, which last longer than conventional bulbs and are far more efficient. And remember that leaving your appliances on standby uses up energy – switch them off and you’ll see huge improvements, in your energy bills too!
7. Make your garden more insect-friendly
Without a stable ecosystem, things start to fall apart. Heavy pesticide use is a major cause of plummeting insect populations, which can cause a catastrophic collapse of nature’s ecosystem. That’s why we can help our planet by making our own garden more insect-friendly. Don’t use fertilisers or pesticides and try to plant plants which are native to the area!
8. Recycle everything
How could you improve your recycling-ability to lead a zero waste lifestyle? Just keep in mind that you can recycle almost everything, from paper to cars. So, before throwing it away, take a minute to find out if you could recycle it instead!
9. Choose your personal care wisely
Make sure that your body wash, toothpaste, face scrub and other beauty products are natural, cruelty-free and sustainable. In our shops you can avoid plastic waste using our Faith in Nature and Ecover refill stations and trying all our eco-friendly & vegan beauty products. 10. Change your everyday routine
Swap your plastic toothbrush for a bamboo one, use all-natural deodorants, bamboo toilet paper and many other sustainable products for your everyday life that you can find in our shops. Why bamboo is sustainable? Because it is the world’s fastest growing plant! It grows 30 times faster than trees and being a grass, it does not require replanting after harvest!
