Do you want to discover a little more? Here below some interesting facts about this company that Joe, the founder, shared with us.
How did it all start?
With the simple question asked down the pub over a pint of vegan friendly beer; why isn’t there a great tasting vegan frozen pizza?
Father and son vegans Mike and Joe Hill talked through the idea with another long-term vegan and friend Tanya, and together they came up with the idea of a range of classic vegan pizzas back in the Summer of 2016. Three months later the company was formed and they started the UK’s first crowdfunding campaign for a 100% vegan company. Three months after that they were selling their first pizzas to several local shops in the vegan friendly city of Norwich.
What’s so special about One Planet Pizzas?
The Classic Range includes: the Three Sheese® Margherita, the Exotic Funghi Feast, the Hawaiian and the Mediterranean Roasted Vegetable. Using only the finest ingredients, every single pizza is made from scratch by hand in a dedicated vegan kitchen based in Norfolk. They’re generously topped with a range of award-winning vegan cheeses and mock ham from Bute Island. All ingredients are sourced locally where possible, including the cold pressed rapeseed oil which comes from Norfolk based company Crush. Flax seed and chia seed are added to the bases and sauce making each pizzas high in Omega 3 amongst other health benefits.
Compared to leading meat and dairy counterparts, these pizzas contain an impressive 20% less fat and saturated fat and less than half the salt and sugar.
The One Planet team believe that the food choices we make are the most significant environmental decisions we face on a daily basis. That’s why they promise that their products will always be 100% plant-based. Furthermore, their pizzas have been calculated as having a 20% lower carbon footprint of a typical meat and dairy pizza. And as for packaging, their pizza boxes are 100% biodegradable and so can be composted and the pizza box wraps are fully recyclable and made from recycled materials.
A better business: why?
Back in 2016, we made history by becoming the first 100% plant-based company to crowdfund within the vegan, veggie and veggie curious community. This means that 20% of the company is owned by the very community it serves. Everyone is involved in the company and the decisions we make. We have investors from around Europe and even as far as Australia!
There are so many new flavours and products that the One Planet Pizza team are working on and talking about. Without saying too much, you can expect to see a meatless feast, a cheesy garlic bread and a gluten-free frozen pizza very soon..
