Sheepdrove Organic Farm

Sheepdrove Organic Farm is owned by publishers and environmental campaigners Peter and Juliet Kindersley. It was established over 30 years ago, when they bought a dilapidated farmhouse on top of the Berkshire downs to practise their dream of self-sufficiency. Over the years they gradually acquired more land - today Sheepdrove is a 2,250 acre farm employing over 40 people.

Sheepdrove is a mixed farm, organically raising sheep, free-range poultry, cattle and pigs in field rotation with arable crops. The welfare and environment of their livestock is of primary importance, and every care is taken to ensure that the animals live comfortable lives. Traditional breeds are selected, such as Duroc boars and Saddleback and Canborough sows. Care is also taken to ensure that the Farm is energy-efficient: for example, the indoor chicken feeders are all powered by solar panels situated on top of the coops.

Juliet and Peter’s original aim was to protect themselves and their land from the polluting chemicals used by surrounding farmers, and to recreate the feel of the original downland landscape. They have found the conversion to organic farming an immensely positive experience; the surrounding countryside has come back to life with the return of many species of birds, wild flowers, small mammals, reptiles and insects.
