Prostate problems

Benign enlargement of the prostrate gland is known as benign prostrate hyperplasia or BPH and can cause such symptoms as increased urinary frequency, night time urgency and reduced force and speed of flow. This is an extremely common condition and is thought to affect 50% of men at sometime in their lives. Although relatively mild in its symptoms it should be noted that BPH can be potentially life threatening if left untreated as it can eventually obstruct the bladder outlet and lead to kidney damage.

According to the British Journal of Urology, plant based medicines and natural remedies are much more popular treatment for prostrate problems than conventional medicine. This is likely to be due to the efficacy of the supplements as well as the absence of unwanted side effects such as impotence.

One of the most effective and most popular natural remedies for prostrate health is saw palmetto. This herb has been shown to significantly reduce the signs of BPH in numerous clinical studies and roughly 90% of men with mild to moderate BPH experience some improvement in symptoms during the first 4 – 6 weeks of therapy.

Another herb that has shown to be effective in prostrate problems is pygeum, an extract from the bark of an African tree. This herb acts in 3 ways: it has an anti – inflammatory activity, a diuretic action and rids the prostrate of any cholesterol deposits that accompany BPH. Similarly extracts of the root of the stinging nettle has been successfully combined with both saw palmetto and pygeum to treat BPH in double blind trials.

In terms of supplements, daily zinc supplements have helped the prostrate return to near normal in 70% of sufferers. However if you are taking large amounts of zinc (30mg a day or more) this can cause a copper deficiency, so it is best to take a zinc supplement with additional copper. The addition of an essential fatty acid supplement to the diet has also resulted in significant improvement for many BPH sufferers. As little as one tablespoon of flaxseed oil a day will ensure you are getting enough EFAs.
