Fibroids

Fibroid tumours are benign growths that consist of abnormal internal muscle cells that can form on the interior and the exterior of the uterus. Fibroids are one of the most common type of tumour and it is thought that 20 – 30% of all women develop them usually in their late thirties and early forties. They are thought to be the result of oestrogen excess.

Many women who have fibroid tumours are not aware of the fact, however if a fibroid is large, it can lead to severe menstrual pain or an inability to maintain a pregnancy.

The holistic treatment and prevention of internal fibroids focuses on naturally reducing the oestrogen-progestone ratio. This can be done by addressing several different factors that may attribute to high levels of oestrogen. Firstly a number of dietary factors are known to reduce oestrogen activity for example increasing consumption of plant foods and soya and decreasing fat, sugar, wheat and dairy.

In terms of natural remedies supplements that are known to decrease oestrogen excess are B vitamins and magnesium; probiotics also aid this function by helping the liver to detoxify the body’s hormones. This detoxification process can further be supported by such herbs as milk thistle and dandelion root or any other herb that decongests the liver.

The herb chaste berry is very useful in treating any hormone imbalance in the body. It appears to have a profound effect on pituitary function and thus normalising hormone function. So too other phytoestrogen containing herbs can be used such as dong quai, black cohosh and licorice.
