Acne treatments
Acne is the most common skin problem affecting 80% of the population to some degree at sometime in their lives. Acne is characterized by black heads, white heads, red swollen spots and in its severest form deep nodules that lead to scar formation. From a natural remedies perspective there is much you can do to improve acne. From the perspective of Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine inflammatory skin diseases such as acne are seen as a manifestation of toxicity and heat in the blood. Therefore it is recommended that the patient takes cooling blood purfiers with an affinity for the skin; for example Yellow Dock, Burdock & Nettle are just some of the herbs that can be helpful for acne.
In conjunction with herbal remedies there are a number of supplements that have been found to be effective in the treatment of acne. Zinc is a particularly important nutrient for healthy skin; it is involved in Vitamin A function, wound healing, immune system activity, inflammation control and tissue regeneration. There have been several studies carried out using zinc to improve acne and in many of these the zinc produced excellent results. Vitamin E and selenium are also important in cases of acne due to their function in the activity of glutathrone peroxidane; which is an enzyme that is important in preventing the inflammation of acne. Vitamin A is also known to be an effective treatment for acne as it reduces sebum production and the build up of keratin in the follicle. However to be really effective in severe cases the dosage is very high and should only be used under the supervision of a dermatologist.
For topical treatment of acne tea tree oil has shown remarkable results as it is strongly antiseptic and antifungal. In studies a five percent tea tree solution was shown to be as effective as five percent benzoyl peroxide in treating acne, but with substantially fewer side effects.
